How to Choose Lamp Shades — Measure Top, Bottom & Height

Metal etched shades fail most often from wrong fitter or wrong height—not from motif choice. Measure first, then pick forest, starry, lotus, starfish, rectangle, or pendant shapes from the Featured map.

1. Measure the three numbers

Record top diameter, bottom diameter, and height of your current shade—or of the harp stack height you need covered. SWAIFDEE titles use the same order: top × bottom × height in inches.

Examples on this site: compact forest 5×9×7.5", mid forest 10×12×8", black/gold forest 7×13×7.8", large bronze 12×14×10". Rectangle parents list stepped top/bottom openings around 5–6.5" top × 8–12" bottom × 10" high. The small UNO pendant is about 9.45" high × 5.12" diameter.

2. Identify the fitter

Spider + harp: most table and floor drums here (forest, starry, lotus, rectangle).
UNO: small pendant parent with titled UNO fitter.
Pendant-specific: diamond bell—confirm hanging hardware on the product page.

If your lamp uses a spider washer on a harp, do not buy a UNO-only pendant cover hoping it will adapt. If your fixture is UNO threaded, a spider drum will not drop on correctly.

3. Clearance and heat

Wide bottoms (13") need base and wall clearance so the shade does not scrape the lamp body or nearby shelves. Metal shades run warmer than fabric drums—follow bulb type and wattage guidance on the listing you purchase. We do not add safe-wattage numbers beyond what the shop page shows.

4. Pick the motif after size

Forest leaf etch, starry cutouts, lotus floral cutwork, starfish multi-pack covers, rectangle box profile, diamond bell pendant—choose style only after size and fitter fit. Motif does not change the measuring job.

5. What we will not invent
